FRANKENSTEIN

US, 2025, 150 minutes, Colour.

Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christophe Waltz, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Charles Dance, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelson, Christian Convery, Burn Gorman, Ralph Ineson.

Directed by Gullermo del Toro.

Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro, has had a long fascination with imagination and fantasy, the celebrated Pan’s Labyrinth, and popular action with Blade, Hellboy, Pinocchio. So, what will he choose to do with Frankenstein?

This is very much an all stops out interpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, its narrative, its characters, its explorations of themes of life and death, human arrogance, playing God, playing the devil. Since Boris Karloff played the creature in the 1930s, there have been very many Frankenstein films, and Hammer Studios thrillers, Kenneth Branagh’s 1994 spectacle…

Here is an epic treatment, the Gothic traditions, running for 2 ½ hours.

The familiar elements are all here, the opening in the Arctic with Frankenstein and the monster stranded, the rescue, Victor Frankenstein narrating his story wanting some kind of healing and forgiveness, the background of the Frankenstein family, demanding father, Victor and his scientific interest, experiments with reviving some kind of life, his laboratory, hunting the dead bodies, the creation of the creature, the lightning, the aftermath, the wandering creature and the confrontation with its maker. And all presented with heightened atmosphere.

In all the treatments, the question is how sympathetic Victor Frankenstein should be. Oscar Isaac here is not sympathetic at all – oppressed by his demanding father (Charles Dance), relying for help on his younger brother, William (Felix Kamerer all) and the link with Elizabeth (Mia Goth) and her tender affection for the Creature. There is an interesting new character, the wealthy man, Harlander, Elizabeth’s uncle, who wants to bankroll Frankenstein and his experiments with some sinister intentions, played with his usual relish by Christophe Waltz.

But, significant in this film is that the Creature, not called monster, though made up of many body parts, neatly put together, is, for the most part, the most sympathetic character. And Jacob Elordi plays him with a great deal of pathos, but with dignity, gradually coming to consciousness, words, ideas, out in the countryside learning compassion, to read, but also discover the truth about his origins and that he was doomed not to die.

This is a film which gives great attention to atmosphere, sets and decor, costumes, atmospheric score, enabling audiences to appreciate why the Frankenstein story has continued to be entertaining but much more, a questioning of human power, human arrogance, and the need for forgiveness.

  1. Lasting popularity of the story, Mary Shelley’s novel and treatment, issues of life, creativity, death, playing God, playing the devil? The many versions, from the 1930s, Hammer Studios, Kenneth Branagh, 1994, the cinema tradition?
  2. The lavish treatment, sets and decor, costumes, atmosphere? Atmospheric score? The Arctic sequences in the snow and ice, the University sequences, the laboratories, the castles, 19th-century society? The countryside sequences, bleak, wolves, winter?
  3. The opening in the Arctic, the presence of Frankenstein and the Creature, the ship, the expedition, the Capt, the crew, the confrontation with the Creature, saving Frankenstein, the threats from the Creature, Frankenstein telling his story, his confession, his fate?

Fantastic Four, The: First Steps

fantastic four

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS

US, 2025, 115 minutes, Colour.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Egon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, Sarah Niles, Mark Gattis. Voices of Ralph Ineson, Matthew Wood.

Directed by Matt Shakman.

2025 as been a superpower blockbuster movie year, Thunderbolts*, then DC with Superman and Marvel with The Fantastic Four. The latter two performed beyond expectations at the box office in the US and around the world. Still popular!

The Fantastic Four are not as familiar to moviegoers as Superman or Batman. There were two films in 2005-7 and an attempt to revive the franchise in 2017. This film is another attempt – and with the promise that the Fantastic Four will appear in forthcoming Avenger films.

One of the features of the Fantastic Four is that they are a very friendly group, especially likeable for the audience. For anyone not familiar with them, and for those who are, there is a prologue to this film, a TV program, a kind of This is Your Life summarising with clips the personal lives and origins and all the exploits of the Four, their venture into space, their DNA being altered, then becoming superheroes, and very popular with the citizens of New York City and the world.

Reed Richards, played sympathetically by Pedro Pascal, is the scientist, mathematician, intelligent, cerebral in his approach to crises. By contrast, Vanessa Kirby is his wife Sue Storm, her discovering she is pregnant, and she and the family, and the audience, happy anticipating the forthcoming birth. Then there is her younger brother, Johnny Storm, played enthusiastically by Joseph Quinn sometimes brash, literally full of fire, eager to be an uncle. The fourth member is Ben, played by Egon Moss-Bachrach, seen as his ordinary self in the prologue but then DNA drastically altered to some thing of a monster look, but genial behind all that orange granite that forms his exterior.

Casting is interesting because two of the Four are British, Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn. Pedro Pascal is from Chile.

When Earth is threatened by a strange alien, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), and threatened by the archetypal cosmic villain, Galacticus (voiced by British Ralph Ineson), the Four go into space to confront him.

Part of the drama is their initial failure (though with some spectacular sequences in space, and, emotionally and dramatically, the birth of the baby), the brief press conference where they tell their adoring public that there is no hope, then the determination to find a way of confronting Galacticus who has set his ambitions on taking over the new born child and its powers.

Which means that the second part of the film is the confrontation of Galacticus, the intervention of the Silver Surfer, the giant Galactic is heavily treading through New York City demolishing huge areas (as Lex Luthor did in Superman) intense demonstration of the superpowers by the Four.

And, there is nothing like a baby to elicit audience sympathy – and there is a pleasing preview during the final credits of the baby at four, with his mother, just having spent a day reading Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species.

  1. The status of the Fantastic Four in the marvel comics, created by Stan Lee? The previous film versions, modest, this version as a new beginning?
  2. The basis of the plot, the Marvel universe, the four characters, Reed and Sue, their backgrounds, marriage? Johnny as Sue’s brother? The work with Ben?
  3. The opening, a kind of resume of the characters and their superpowers, their activities, their reputation in New York City?
  4. The relationship between Reed and Sue? Background of their space mission, the experience, overwhelmed, the changes in their DNA, superpowers? The marriage, Sue, discovering she was pregnant, Reed, the scientist and mathematician, his more cerebral approach, his joy? Johnny and his enthusiasm?
  5. Ben, in the television program, his normal self, the space experience, the DNA, the granite and its colour, his size? And his voice, human and humane, his interventions? The encounter with Rachel, the students and his comic behaviour with them, his later going to find Rachel?
  6. The situation with Galactus, origins, age, giant, sinister, eager for power, targeting the baby? The Silver Surfer, her appearance, the surfboard, through space, arriving on earth, the warning?

  8. The decision to go into space, travel, the space ship, the equipment, technical skills, Reed and intelligence? The confrontation with the Silver Surfer, with Galactus, their being caught, the escape, travelling back to earth, the pursuit by the Silver Surfer, her skills, evading capture, each of the Four coping, Ben and his piloting, reading the calculations, Johnny and his attempts with his fire? Their eventually arriving home?
  9. Sue, pregnant during the return, her experience, everybody involved in the delivery of the baby, the happy birth? Franklin?
  10. The television show, Mary and her friendship, the press conference on return, no hope, the reaction of the public, gradually turning against them?
  11. Reed and his experiments with transportation, the plan to move the planet Earth to the outer reaches away from Galactus? Its failing?
  12. The determination to resolve the situation, the public learning about Galactus wanting the baby, accusations of selfishness with the family not giving up the baby? The calculations, seemingly impossible? The discovery of the lever, the calculations, the appeal to the public, the television response, the collecting all the materials, the building of the bridges, the issue of electricity, the world collaborating in blacking out to give full power?
  13. The plan, times square, the central landing, the ring to trap Galactus?
  14. The encounter with The Silver Surfer, her coming for the baby, the dialogue with Johnny, her back story, her experience with Galactus, giving up family for the sake of the planet? Her hostility, her embarrassment and shame, her finally turning against Galactus and sacrificing herself?
  15. The help of Harvey Elder, his role in the past, sinister, ruling in the subterranean area, the clashes with the Four, their appeal to him, selfish, but agreeing, taking all the refugees from New York City?
  16. The arrival of Galactus, gigantic, walking through New York, crushing the buildings, the tremors for those in the underground? Capacities, voice, penetrating sight to see the baby, his being blinded, the substitute group, but his seeing where it was hidden, the continued pursuit, Ben and his interventions, Johnny willing to sacrifice himself, read in the calculations, Sue and her willpower, forcing Galactus back, almost to the Circle, the machine, the 37 seconds, his destruction?
  17. The Four, acclaimed, the public, Ed Gilbert and the program, Mary and the studio, the sudden call and their going out on mission?
  18. The preview for the Avengers films, four years later, the baby and reading Charles Darwin, Sue finding the baby with the sinister hooded figure?

Nosferatu/ 2024

nosferatu

NOSFERATU

US, 2024, 133 minutes, Colour.

Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgaard, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney.

Directed by Robert Eggers.

Nosferatu was the title of the early film version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, 1922, Germany, vivid black-and-white photography, angles, framing, Expressionist. The title was also used in 1979 for Werner Hertzog’s version of the story and tribute to the 1922 film. Now, a 2024 version, once again the tribute to the 1922 film, not only tribute but incorporating many of its visual aspects, and directed by Robert Eggers, only a few films so far in his career, but atmospheric, the Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman.

Since the 1920s, there have been Dracula and vampire films every decade, some serious, many British, some parodies, even the recent Renfield with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula, also featuring Nosferatus, Nicholas Hoult.

We are in Germany, 1838, wonderful recreation of the town, the streets and ambience, the homes, elegance. There is a very strong supporting British cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph ineson, Simon McBurney. There is also a lot of strong dialogue throughout, the point of view of the rationalist who does not believe in the supernatural contrasting with those who do believe and those who are pragmatic faced with unexplained phenomena.

The question can be raised, why another Dracula film in 2024. And will it contribute to an appreciation of the Dracula and vampire legends?

The first attempt at an answer is to consider this film as a drama apart from the horror. The focus is on a young woman, Ellen, Lily-Rose Depp in a striking and physically and emotionally demanding performance. She dreams, has mystical experiences, is in love, makes a pact – which, in fact, will be a diabolical pact. But, she has the possibility of living a normal life, marrying Thomas (Nicholas Holut), hope that he will support and save her. But, he is commissioned by his manager to travel to Romania to negotiate with a mysterious Count Orloc who wants to buy a Castle in the German town. Ellen is fearful as Thomas leaves, and rightly so…

There is mysterious drama, Thomas finding himself in a strange village, superstitious villagers, and then his encounter with the Count.

And the second attempt at and some is to consider the film as horror. The atmosphere at the castle is more than eerie, the suggestions of the malevolent presence of the Count, his face, his behaviour and cruelty, his threats, diabolical consequences. Is played by Bill Skarsgaard as monstrous Some direct horror scenes but always the sense of horror menace. And, when Thomas returns home, the psychological disturbances in Ellen and her erratic behaviour, the count killing his friend’s wife and child, the discussions with an expert (Willem Dafoe) and the explanations of vampire behaviour. And, as well, the town is besieged by a plague of rats. And, Ellen’s disturbed dreams, erotic menace and horror, the unmasking of the Count.

And so, we can ask what are the comparisons with other versions of the story, how well these variations work as drama and horror, and how we are immersed in a world of evil destroying hope and love.

  1. The literary tradition of Dracula and Nosferatu, the late 19th century, Bram Stoker’s novel? The cinema tradition, the 1922 version, the English language tradition of Dracula, serious films, horror films, comedy and parodies? Werner Hertzog and Nosferatu 1979, homage to the 1922 version? This 2024 version, homage, reworking the particular perspectives of the writer-director?
  2. Audience familiarity with the story, the traditions, the variations? This version changing the names of the characters, the German city? Drawing on the basic ideas and themes from Bram Stoker and the Nosferatu films?
  3. The style of filmmaking? The importance of colour, colour grading, black-and-white, vivid colour, scenes tinted, unsaturated colour, but sometimes with bright highlights? The overall impact of this colour experience? The framing of the film, the angles, the homage to the 1922 version, using its styles? The style of the dialogue, old classical style, all, sometimes arch and artificial, placing the audience in the period, Germany, 1838? The film presented as a modern interpretation of old filmmaking styles?
  4. The framework, Ellen, young, the focus on her face, her calling out to the vampire to come to her? Her age, her commitment, her dreams, her melancholy, psychological states? The years passing, her marriage to Thomas, happiness, yet her melancholy, fears, love, his going away, her anxieties? Staying with Richard and Anna? Her dreams, her moods, their concern, a sense of what was happening to Thomas while away, the coming of the mysterious lover? The doctor, his concern, treatment, seeking out of Professor von Frantz, his diagnosis, treatment? Further dreams, the return of Thomas, the sexual encounter and her wanting love, the continuing menace of the mysterious shadow, the shadow coming to the house, overcoming her, the sexual encounter, the sun rising, her commitment, his sacrificing himself for her love?
  5. The title, the focus on the vampire, the estate agent, Knock and his eagerness, Count Orloc wanting the house, sending Thomas, the buildup of financial advantage, for his marriage? Knock, his madness, in servitude to Nosferatu, his madness, in the cell, confrontations, killing the guard, the interview with the professor and the doctor? Death? The plague?
  6. Count Orloc, in Ellen’s visions, the Shadow, skeletal, the long fingers and nails, Thomas arriving at the village, the village people and their fears, the atmosphere, singing and dancing, yet warnings, was going to the Castle, walking in the snow, the carriage, his experience in the Castle, overwhelmed by the count, violence, blood, his debilitation, escape, taken by the nuns, the Orthodox religious ceremonies, his leaving, out of the power of the Count, his return, debilitated, with the doctor, the professor, Richard, Anna’s death, the plague?
  7. The Count, the voyage, in the container, the sailors, the Captain, the rats, the plague, the deaths, the ship arriving in the Port, the dispersion of the rats, the plague and deaths, deaths in the street? The Count, visiting Anna, her being pregnant, the blood? His attack on the two daughters, the deaths, Richard and the burials? The mausoleum and his visits?
  8. The doctor, his concern, medical help, friendship with Richard, the reputation of the professor, going to visit him, persuading him to join in? The professor, his personality, reputation, researchers, the occult? The visits to Anna? The visits to Ellen? Thomas’ return? Richard and his scepticism?
  9. Richard, friendship with Thomas, lending the money, Richard and his wife, the family, the boisterous two daughters, in the shipping business? His scepticism about the professor, the support of the doctor, his narrations, the death of the family, the burials?
  10. The buildup to confronting the Count, the three nights, his approaching the town, coming to Ellen, her trying to resist? The scenes of his possession of her, her not being herself, her face, the town, Thomas and his shock?
  11. Thomas and his determination, hurrying to the mausoleum, expecting the vampire, discovering Knock, his madness and death, through the heart?
  12. The hurrying back, the encounter with Ellen, the sun rising, remains of the creature, Thomas and his grief, in the final image of Ellen and the remains of Nosferatu?
