Enola Homes is the sister of Sherlock and Mycroft, the creation of Nancy Springer in a series of popular novels. This is the third of the books to be filmed. It presupposes most of the central characters and the cast return for this version. Millie Bobby Brown is lively and older. Henry Cavill returns as a sombre Sherlock. And, there is the creation of their mother character, a rebel, explosives, demonstrations, somewhat alienated from her family, Helena Bonham Carter enjoying the role.

The marriage is to take place in Malta, most of the action there, Malta and British occupation (and with some sequences railing against British colonialism) and some complications with the military and justice.

Enola (alone spelt backwards) the talks to camera and explains that the good film starts with a wedding – but, she hesitates, his pursued by Dr Watson with the news that Sherlock has been kidnapped. She is committed to finding her brother, using his methods to deduce what has happened to him.

She is in love with the Duke of Tewkesbury, played again by Louis Partridge. Then his mother is also abducted and there is intense deliberation to discover what has happened to Sherlock.

At the beginning, the audience has been introduced to a plot focusing on Tewkesbury, and Moriarty, now a female villain played by Sharon Duncan Brewster, pursues Sherlock and takes him.

Sherlock does leave a clue on the mirror, the name of the Afghan town,Khost. So, questions about Afghanistan, the role of Tewkesbury’s father, Afghan soldiers, payment, doubledealing, cover-ups…

Which all leads to various adventures, and Enola going into action, exposes, confrontation with Moriarty – and happy ending and the possibility for a fourth episode.

1. The popularity of the series? Sherlock Holmes sister? Comparisons with Sherlock? Her skill as a detective?
2. The British settings, the action taking place in Malta, the vistas of Malta, landscapes, the cities? The musical score?
3. Enola, her age, from the previous films, relationship with Sherlock, comparisons, her relationship with her mother, eccentricities? Seeing her at work as a detective, using Sherlock’s methods? Her commentary throughout the film, looking to camera?
4. The opening, a wedding, Tewksbury at the altar, the congregation, no bride, her decision-making, getting into the carriage, pursued, Dr Watson, the news of Sherlock’s abduction? Her becoming involved, leaving Tewksbury at the altar?
5. The character of Sherlock, his reputation, his letters, logical, not emotional, the interactions with Enola, with Dr Watson, Watson reminiscing about the relationship, the Team, his diaries? Knowing in advance, the past with Moriarty, at the dinner in Malta, seeing the soldiers, pursuing him, disappearance?
6. The prologue, England, Moriarty in jail, being freed, the name Tewksbury, her mission, the implication of the British officers in Malta?
7. Enola, her pursuit of the soldier, his being killed, the local police, the interrogation, the British officials intervening, her freedom? Her pursuit of the woman, the warning, the woman killed? Her looking for clues after Tewksbury’s mother was kidnapped, finding the medals? Using Sherlock’s methods, reflections?
8. The local revolutionary, following Enola, the confrontations and fight, his motivations, against the colonialism of the British, and seeing the colonialism in action?
9. Tewksbury, the past stories, relationship with Enola, the scenes of proposal, her acceptance, the bond between them, the swimming sequence? His mother’s abduction? Working with Enola? Dr Watson and his collaboration?

• The arrival of Eudoria, her personality, and dominance, with her daughter, the wedding, her reputation explosions, collaborating with the investigation, going to the headquarters, wanting the documents, the attack on the soldier, the search, finding information about Afghanistan, the gold, the stealing? Sherlock and his clues, writing the name Khost?
• Moriarty, the past with Sherlock, vengeance, her plan, the commission from the British, her setting up all the clues, luring Enola along the way, her vengeance and killing her agents the abduction of Tewksbury’s mother, the scenes in the cell, the water, interrogation, pouring out the water?
• Tewksbury, the explanation of the cave, Enola working out where the gold was, finding it?
• The buildup to the final confrontation, her putting the gun on Moriarty, Moriarty and the explosives, the local soldiers, then Moriarty’s squad, the shootout?
• The release of the mother, the expose of the officials, the gold the betrayal, the hiding, the discovery, the exposure of the British? Tewksbury and his disappointment with his father?
• Enola, whether she should become lady Tewksbury or not, the class issues, the jokes about class, Enola and the discussions with Tewksbury, his giving up his title?
• An enjoyable Holmes adventure, Sherlock, Enola, Moriarty? And the future?

THE ELECTRIC STATE

US, 2025, 125 minutes, Colour.

Directed by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo.

There were high expectations for this big-budget action fantasy adventure, set in an alternate world in the 1990s. It was directed by the Russo Brothers who had moved from smaller popular films to three Captain America superhero epics and then to two Avengers adventures, Avengers Endgame registering the highest box office.

Then came this ambitious fantasy adventure, based on the graphic images by Simon Stalenhag, adapted by the Russo Bros regular writers for the Marvel Universe films. And a very strong cast of character actors led by Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown and including Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Holly Hunter, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Colman Domingo…

However, reviews were unfavourable and the film was not popular. However, there is much to appeal to audiences who like imaginative, futuristic fantasy adventures.

1. The status of the film, the budget, the cast, the directors? Based on an illustrated novel? Pull critical response?
2. The 1990s, the title, an alternate world history, humans versus robots? The title?
3. The American cities, the war, the deserts and outposts? The musical score?
4. Ethan Skate as hero and villain, his technology an empire, the robots, taking over the consciousness of human minds, the reaction of the humans, many living and vegetative life, rising up against the robots, the human victory, robots to the Exclusion Zone?
5. 1994, Michelle, history of the crash and her parents, in foster homes, Ted and his lazy life, Michelle at school, not using AI technology for her work?
6. Cosmo, the sense in robot, the TV character, Michelle’s brother, Christopher and his delight with Cosmo? Cosmo programmed with gestures, sounds, controlled by Christopher’s consciousness?
7. The sense of mission, the encounter with Keats, his history, his character, offhand, soldier? The visit to Dr Amherst and his declaration the Christopher was dead?
8. The adventure, the journey, the trek through the desert, Keats and is exploitations? The Exclusion Zone, home of the robot, Mr Peanut? Characters and voices?
9. The confrontation with Skate, his character, presumptions, using Christopher and his mind and consciousness, the impact for humans, robots?
10. The pursuit of Christopher, Col Bradbury, the deadly mission, candle Bradbury and is disillusioned with Skate, changing his attitude?
11. Michelle, PC at the robots, the confrontation with skate’s Army? The role of Bradbury?
12. Christopher, the explanation, his wanting to be disconnected, Michelle disconnecting? The further attacks, the attack on Herman, the smaller version?
13. The aftermath, Christopher dying, Skate and his loss of control, arrest? Michelle and her explanation of what it happened? And the possibility of humans and robots and the Exclusion Zone in the future?

DAMSEL

US, 2024, 110 minutes, Colour.

The title, Damsel, seems very straightforward. And it is in the establishing of life in the kingdom:  there are two sisters, the older sister, Elodie, played by Milly Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes) parents played by an interesting combination, Ray Winstone and Angela Bassett. But, there are difficult times and father has arranged marriage with a Prince in a prosperous realm.

However, the title is misleading insofar as Elodie is never a damsel in distress though she does experience quite a deal of distress, especially in confronting a Dragon (voiced by Shoreh Agladashloo) but the point is that she is one of those heroines, think Princess Diana in Wonder Woman, or Furiousa…

Everything seems initially wonderful in the prosperous realm, especially a Prince Charming played by Nick Robinson and his mother played by Robin Wright. But, immediately after the wedding, the narrative shifts gear and we see that Emily is a sacrificial offering to the Dragon, as has happened with many a Princess before her.

So, moving into action, but frequently in the dark cave of the Dragon, Ellie confronts the Dragon, suffers the loss of her father and his repenting of trapping her in the situation, confrontation with the Prince, with his harridan mother, and a rescue by her own mother.

This is something of a mediaeval show in the royalty versus the Dragon genre, some have complained that it takes itself far too seriously and would have been more enjoyable with some touches of irony. Perhaps.

1. The popularity of Game of Thrones, television, films, Dragon and kingdom stories?
2. Mythical kingdoms, landscapes, valleys and mountains, cities, palaces, dragons’ lairs?
3. Costumes, decor, special effects, action? Musical score?
4. The prologue, damsels, the tradition for distress and rescue, not this kind of film?
5. The king and his soldiers, approaching the mountain, the confrontation with the Dragon, the flames, consumed? The later flashbacks and the explanation of the killing of the Dragon’s children, the death of the king? Motivation for revenge on the descendants of the king?
6. Centuries later…? Introduction to Lord Bayford and his family, the two daughters, his wife, stepmother? The bonds? Characters? Famine, in need, the negotiations, the voyage to the Kingdom of Aurea?
7. Queen Isabelle, Prince Henry, the court, the planned marriage, the pomp and circumstance? Yet the stepmother and her wariness? Lord Bayford and his reticence? Two sisters, joyful, and D and her meeting with the prince, his tour, friendly? The prospects?
8. The wedding, the cutting of the hands of the bonding of blood (and the later information that the Dragon would suspect the smell of the blood and the princesses have been the daughters of the kingdom)? The brusqueness of the behaviour, throwing Elodie into the abyss?
9. Elodie, her personality, strength of character, the impact of the betrayal, injuries, the voice of the Dragon, the continued threats, vengeance, the pursuit, the flames, the corridors of rock, her taking refuge, her being burnt, leg injuries, but the finding of the glow worms and their healing, providing light? The taunting of the dragon? The hallucination of the other victims? The names carved on the rock, carving her name? The maps, taking stock of where she was? Energy, courage, the hook for the crystals, climbing the crystals, the dragon confronting, her fall? Leaping over the cousins, literal cliffhanging? In the sunlight, the vast cliff, seeing the men and the horses? The writing the horse, escaping, the Dragon and the horse on fire?
10. Her father and the men, coming to her rescue, calling out her name, the eventual confrontation by the Dragon, catching the man and flying and killing, confronting Lord Bayford? His plea?
11. Elodie and her witnessing everything, keeping silent, coming to her father, his apology, her for giving him? His urging her to take the rope?
12. The confrontation with the Dragon, the sword in the eye, tempting the fire and leaping aside and its rebounding on the Dragon? The possibility for killing the dragon? Not killing the Dragon, the conversation, the explanation of the deception by the Queen for the victims? The dragon and the motivation? Letting the dragon live?
13. Queen Isabelle, her reaction, taking the little sister, throwing her over the cliff, the reaction of Prince Henry, his appeal?
14. Elodie, finding her stepmother, wounded, the return to confront the Queen, the altercation, the dragon arriving, eliminating the enemies with Fire?
15. The sisters reunited with their stepmother, sailing home, a feisty warrior?
