AMRUM

Amrum is an island off the north coast of Germany. It is the setting for this 1945s story, the last weeks of World War II, the inhabitants of the island not sympathetic to Hitler, but a strong authoritarian presence on the island.

The story is that of veteran German actor-writer-director, Hark Bohm. He was preparing to direct the film but became ill, relying on his protégé, distinguished German director, Fateh Akin, from Hamburg and of Turkish lineage. In fact, Hark died a few weeks after the release of the film.

His memoir is dramatised in the central character, Nanning, a compelling performance by the young actor, Jasper Billerbeck, in his first film. He is 12. With his brother and sister, his pregnant mother, they have left his father, a Nazi writer on genetic issues, in Hamburg and returned to an ancestral home on Amarum. Nanning Is a member of the Nazi youth, proudly wearing his uniform. His mother is committed to the Nazi vision for Germany.

Nanning has a local friend, Herman, and they share many interests, go to school together,  to help in the fields, hunting rabbits, Nanning having to learn how to degut a rabbit, his pregnant mother in need of meat but with a great desire for white bread and butter with honey. And Nanning makes finding this his quest, scrounging some wheat from a doctor who has it for health purposes, getting some local honey from the beekeepers, being refused butter by a farmer who has been denounced by Nanning’s mother as disloyal. And, he goes to the mainland to the office of the Nazi commander for some sugar.

Then there are the back stories to his mother and father, their denouncing Nanning’s uncle and his engagement to a Jewish fiance who is arrested and sent to a concentration camp. There are stories of the older generation, including his parents, going to New York, liking life there but having to return because of the depression.

And, there is a group of refugees from Poland and eastern Germany coming to settle in the town, confronting Nanning but, a fine sequence when Nanning actually saves the life of the boy who had been tormenting him.

The film offers yet another different perspective on Germany in the war, a focus on ordinary people, their struggles, a humane story challenging as to where are sympathies lie, characters who alienate us with their views, and the story of a young boy who will grow into adult hood in postwar Germany.

BRICK

Germany, 2025, 99 minutes, Colour.

There have been a number of films and franchises, thinking cap cube, the capsule franchise, the Escape Room franchise with a group of random characters login, trapped, using their ingenuity in ways to escape.

This is a German variation on this theme. We are in a German city, in an apartment block, a focus initially on a married couple, the lender the death of their child on them, he more withdrawn, she deciding to leave, and then finding themselves trapped in their apartment, a mysterious for with strange qualities surrounding them, barring any kind of escape.

For purposes of the drama, they find some tools and are able to break through walls within the apartment block, discovering quite a number of characters who have to deal with the situation, ranging from a grandfather and daughter, eliciting some compassion, an erratic man for drugs, his girlfriend, some of the characters but, especially a mysterious character who suggests that the wall is protecting them from peoples outside the building.

There is a notion on the level of the married couple and possible reconciliation in the crisis, the death of the grandfather, the means of collaboration to try to escape, the ingenuity of those who have some scientific background, and yet an atmosphere of malevolence as the people are trapped.

At times, visually arresting, especially with the wall. And plenty of drama and melodrama as the various characters try to use ingenuity to escape the increasingly claustrophobic confinement.

2. The setting, the German city, the buildings, industrial development, the river? Most of the action confined to the apartment block, the range of apartments, rooms, moving down? The visuals of the walls chemical and physical qualities? The musical score?
3. The introduction to Tim and Liv, his studies and work, dedication, the flashbacks to her pregnancy, the child, the death of the child, the tension between them? His neglecting his wife, her decision to leave?
4. The appearance of the wall, visually, suggestions of substance, the magnetism, the codes, impenetrable?
5. The suggestion of the inhabitants of the building to be buried alive? The encounter with Yuri, his suggestion that the outside world was contaminated, the importance of staying within the building?
6. Tim and his expertise with the computer, programming, Liv and her architectural background? Their having to work together, the initial hostility, gradually mellowing, supporting each other, discussions and acknowledgements, a reconciliation?
7. The seeming impossibility of exiting the apartment, the careful study, the possibilities, experiments with the wall? The decision to go down, the removal of the flaws?
8. The discovery of the others, of Marvin and Anna, the relationship, Spanish background, the drugs, Marvin impaired? The consequences, with the gun, his shooting, his moods, need for drugs, Anna and her support, love? Their participation in the attempts to leave, Marvin and his violence, especially towards Yuri, the gun, Anna and her helping, her commitment, the brick, inserting her hand, her arm, being trapped, everybody trying to pull her out, her death? Marvin and his reaction, the gun, shooting himself?
9. The discovery of Oswalt and Leah, his age, background, infirmity, suspicions, the gun, Leah and her devotion, gradually becoming involved, the gun, Marvin, shooting, Oswalt death? Leah and her researchers, examining the documents? Killed by Yuri?
10. Yuri and Anton, Anton dead, his skills, the computers, his documentation, Yuri and his domination, his story about contamination outside, discovering the videos, his killing Anton? Confrontations with him, the fights, shooting, the final confrontation with Tim, Liv saving him?
11. Using ingenuity, the codes, the mathematics, the computer help, Tim and Luke working together, being able to open the brick?
