A brief drama from Denmark and the outlying Faroe islands. But, as we watch the film, the question is whether this is a paradise, let alone the last paradise on earth.
The central character is a young man, Kari (Samal H. Hansen continually looking like a brooding Robert Pattinson). He lives with his younger sister, something of a cantankerous relationship, she wanting to assert her independence, he, according to his lights, trying to help her. Their mother has died. The father is a wanderer, in and out of the house, then away on a fishing boat.
Kari works at a fishing factory, routine job, day by day. Yet, he quite likes it, is regretful that the signs seem to be that commercially, the factory will have to close. He has little education. He is very friendly with a local girl who is about to go to study art in Paris. And the continued difficulties with his sister.
Not exactly paradise. However, the perspective, despite all initial appearances, is one of hope, the possibility that Kari can express himself sincerely to his sister, that she is able to hear him truly and be reconciled. Reconciled family could be something of a paradise.
- The grim film, the touch of the morose? The ironic title? Small island, family unity, a last paradise?
- The authentic settings, the village, the sea, homes, the fish factory, socialising, the local language spoken? The musical score?
- Kari’s story, his age, his relationship with his sister, the tension, the dead mother, the absent father, unreliable, his moments in the house, going to see? Kari and his work in the factory, regular, monotonous? His friend at the factory, his relationship with Ellen, her going to study art in Paris, her paintings, his admiration? His deep introversion, alone, reluctantly going to parties, managing at home, the clashes with his sister? Relationship with the factory boss, the uncertainties, factory closure, the discussion with the careers counsellor, his nine years at school, prospects?
- Kari and his sister, her age, resentment towards the father, feeling the loss of the mother, her tantrum is at home, avoiding school, clashes with Kari? Storming out of the house, hurtful remarks?
- The glimpse of the Father, unreliable, absent, going to see?
- Alan, her mother and her friendship, art and paintings, going to study, the relationship with Kari, supporting him, their discussions, her influence on him?
- John, his friend, time together, John outgoing, the parties, the relationship with Kari’s sister, getting a job in a boat?
- Kari, liking the village, wanting to stay, lack of prospects?
- His bad writing, the notes for speaking to his sister, her being unwilling to listen, his reading them out, the bonding with her, her response? A future?
