On January 29, 2011 we will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Father Hubert Linckens, MSC. On this occasion, Sister Francis Baum, MSC is offering us a brief reflection booklet on the person of Hubert Linckens. During his life he meant so much to many people as a son, brother, priest, teacher, Founder and Provincial of the North German Province of the MSC Society, Procurator for the South Sea Missions, General Councilor and Visitator in Rome, and Founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart.

In this reflection, Sister Francis looks at the life of Fr. Linckens from different perspectives: Hubert Linckens, the man and the attitudes that characterized him; Fr. Linckens as seen through the eyes of those who knew him, his motivations and spirituality, his inner passions and concerns. As an Australian, she includes in this book-let some aspects of his life with which we have been less familiar.

The reflections are put into the broader context of the source of inspiration for our lives as Christians: quotes from the Old and the New Testament encourage us to discover the guiding hand of God in Fr. Linckens life and his way of being an instrument in Gods hands. These perspectives give us an insight into the great man whom we, the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart claim as our founder. Finally Sister Francis invites us to face the challenges of todays world.

As you read these texts and reflect on them, you might find yourself drawn to a particular perspective. It is our hope that through your personal pondering and the sharing in community, you will be led to a deeper appreciation of Father Linckens himself, of the charism that he has passed on to us and the diverse ways in which this charism is lived by women and men of the Chevalier Family.

Imagine a cold January morning. A child is born in a little-known place in Holland, familiarly called “the green nest” and is baptized on the same day. Little did his parents dream that this child would be called by God to fulfil a very significant role as a Missionary of His Heart. His lifes pilgrimage would take him “to the ends of the earth”. The fire enkindled at Baptism would become his passion that the Sacred Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere and his confrères and sisters truly live to be on earth the Heart of God.

This booklet is dedicated to Fr. Hubert Linckens, our Founder, and to all of you, my sisters present and past, living and deceased, who have heard Christs call to you and followed Him on the road taken by Hubert Linckens.

In compiling this booklet I have consulted archives, many documents, short biographies and stories, as well as books. I have used Fr. Linckens’ own words, Scripture quotations and quotes from other writers, past and contemporary. It is impossible to do justice to his life in such a short booklet, nor to personally acknowledge everyone. On the one hand this booklet is Fr. Linckens’ story, while on the other it is ours, yours and mine. In the designs of Gods Heart which stand forever (Ps. 33) our lives are reflected in the life of our Founder.

I offer you this reflection on his life, seen from various viewpoints, as a spring-board to your own. I invite you to use it in any way that calls forth the desires and thoughts of your own heart. Maybe the quotes and Scripture passages suggested will stimulate your own deep longings and enable you to return often to your original hearts desire. Reflection is invitation to stop, be still and let the Lord overtake you.

That story is ours to continue, wherever we are –

To be on earth the Heart of God.
